What is mission? At Second Baptist, we believe that God’s mission is putting a broken world back together with His love. That’s why God sent Jesus.
We also believe that God invites us to join that mission. So at Second Baptist, we challenge everyone to get involved in sharing God’s love and make the world a better place in Jesus’ name. Here are some of the ways we try to do that:
Telling People About Jesus
We know that for some people evangelism is a tired or even negative word. Maybe it makes you think of people yelling about God, sin, or hell. At Second Baptist, we believe that telling people about Jesus isn’t about yelling or anger; it’s about God’s love for us; it’s about joy for you; and it’s about peace for the world. Sometimes churches and religion get in the way of people knowing Jesus (even our church and our religion), but we think that pointing people toward Jesus is a wonderful thing, even if people never ever darken the door of our church.
Being a Good Neighbor
Part of our identity as a church is our location. We’re excited about being in downtown Little Rock and want to try and do things that contribute to our neighborhood. We do downtown cleanups periodically, where we pick up trash off downtown streets. In addition, we are also proud members of the Downtown Little Rock Partnership.
Another way that Second Baptist seeks to be a good neighbor is by supporting a number of social organizations in town that benefit the entire community of Little Rock, North Little Rock and the surrounding region. View a list of our local mission partners.
One of our most significant areas of mission involvement at Second Baptist is in helping the poor. We do that in a number of ways, but among the most significant is through our partnership with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and a ministry called Together For Hope. view a video about this effort.
We also maintain a number of ministry efforts right here at Second Baptist that help us build relationships with the homeless and working poor. For more information on how to get involved in these efforts contact Chris Ellis, our Minister of Mission and Outreach.
We believe that God not only cares about Little Rock, Arkansas, and the United States, but also about every other part of the world. So, at Second Baptist we try to be aware of what is happening in places like Darfur and the Middle East through a weekly prayer focus on global concerns.
We also try and put our prayer into action by sending teams of people out to make the world a better place in Jesus’ name. In recent months, we have sent teams out to do hurricane relief on the Gulf Coast, to assist church planters in Canada, and to work with HIV patients and orphans in South Africa. In addition to focusing on the material needs of people and on global issues of peace and justice, we also try to remind ourselves at Second Baptist that human beings need times and places to be still and enjoy sacred beauty. With that in mind, another way that Second Baptist seeks to minister to the needs of the community is by owning and operating a beautiful retreat center on 240 acres in West Little Rock with a 35 acre lake. We run a summer day camp for kids and rent out the facility for group usage. If you’d like to know more, visit the Lake Nixon website.
