Hi. I’d like to tell you a little about why I think Second Baptist is such a special place. We’re not a flashy church. We’re certainly not a huge church. But there’s something about this group of people that is dynamic, that exudes life and vitality.

Part of it, I think, comes from a heritage of openness and grace that has been a part of our identity for a lot longer than I’ve been the pastor. Our church has taken some pretty courageous stands throughout our history and that mindset continues to be a part of our identity today. It shapes the way we treat people who are different and the way we love people who have made mistakes. It also shapes our desire to ask hard questions and shapes our comfort level with not finding easy answers. Second Baptist is a progressive congregation and has been for much of its history.

Part of it comes from our location, as strange as that sounds. Second Baptist Church has always been in downtown Little Rock, even when there weren’t billions of dollars being invested in developments within a few blocks of us. We have chosen to remain where we are, even when it was hard to do so. And whenever a person or a group of people are willing to meet a challenge, it shapes character.

The biggest reason for the dynamic nature of this group of people, however, is that we are trying our best to put an intense focus on Jesus. We’re trying, as best we’re able, to worship Him, to be like Him, to love each other as He loves us, and to make the world look like what Jesus wants it to look like.

That also means that our focus isn’t on some other things. We’re not interested in trying to get bigger just so that we can be bigger. We’re not trying to be all things to all people. There’s a good chance that if you visit our church, we may not do something exactly like you’d want. That’s okay. There are a lot of good churches out there, and it’s our desire that you connect with a group of people that challenge and bless you, whether that is our church or not.

But if you’re interested in being a part of a community that is trying to be intentional about letting every aspect of life and faith be shaped by who Jesus was and is, if you’re interested in connecting with a group of people who love to learn, and if you’re interested in experiencing life with people who want to make a difference in the world, then Second Baptist just might be where God is leading you.
